The depicted animal is a heraldic panther. This is distinct from the genus of natural animals (lions, tigers, leopards, oncas, and jaguars) but is a monster.

According to legend, the panther will feed, sleep for three days, then come out and roar. The roar includes a sweet odor that draws other animals to it.
On the continent, a panther is often depicted with a horse’s head, eagle’s talons, and horns.
I typically add horns in nod to the fact that my noble lineage derives from my originally German mum, my Da & Granda being both New Men.
The panther may be seen on the lower left of the triptych's left panel.
